BRANDING CASE STUDY



Brand Identity, packaging, and website design for a Japanese skincare brand with an e commerce platform that is seeking to bring the experience of oriental beauty to the Indian consumer base.



Brand



‘Mochi-hada’ or to say nice skin is how Japanese refer a soft and healthy skin. Japan has been the home to ancient beauty practices that have been carried till date. Its foundation is based on skin hydration and rejuvenation that leads to a soft and supple skin. Using no harsh chemicals, being mild in nature are some of the key factors that define the Japanese skincare.


Kanpeki Labs is a part of the Kanpeki Professional Range, which has been catering to the skincare market for 25 years and manufactured products for B2B segment. Now, kanpeki Labs is taking further its legacy by bringing this same traditional ancient Japanese skincare practices to the forefront by backing it up with professional scientific formulations that offer the consumer a wholistic skincare solution.



Challenge



People are usually weary of trying new products, especially when it comes to the skincare. At the same time if the brand is created around genuine ideology, people often let go of their inhibitions. We wanted to introduce Kanpeki Labs to a wider consumer base by making it approachable in a way that consumers didn’t seem alienated by the Japanese design language.


Simultaneously, we also wanted to extend the scientific prowess of Kanpeki Labs which is one of its key highlights.



Solution



We translated the proposition of Kanpeki Labs ie: ’Skincare borne out of Japanese beauty secrets in confluence with science backed skincare formulations’ in the design with the help of various elements. Beginning with contemporary artforms like pottery; we included the vessels which allowed us to depict both traditional methods and scientific formulations through a common thread.


The lines on top of the vessel signifies an experiment which aligns with Kanpeki Labs method. Furthermore, to add a subtle Japanese touch, we added elements like the mountains to create an oriental connect.



Result



The new brand identity and communication helped Kanpeki Labs actualise its vision of fulfilling its promise of conscious skincare by inviting consumers to make the better choice. It enabled the brand to continue its endeavour of offering a less explored skincare practice to the world by making it approachable.



Taking inspiration from varied minimal Japanese pottery design to depict vessels of formulations.



With a contemporary outlook from the research, VOLUME built a cohesive system for the products. The form remains consistent, but colors and shapes vary to create a distinct identity for each product.
